Most people get the first one wrong, and almost always in the same way. They put it in the middle of the lip, chew it out of nervousness, and take it out after four minutes because the tingle felt like a warning. None of that is your fault. Nothing on the tin explains any of it.
Here is the whole thing, in the order it actually happens.
Where to put a nicotine pouch
Under your upper lip, to one side rather than dead centre.
The side matters more than people expect. Dead centre puts the pouch where your tongue keeps finding it and where it is most visible if you talk. Off to one side it sits flat against the gum, stays out of the way, and you stop noticing it within a minute.
Push it gently into place with your tongue so the whole face of the pouch touches the gum. That contact is what releases the nicotine. A pouch sitting at an angle with half of it against the inside of your lip works far less well and feels worse doing it.
How to use a nicotine pouch step by step
- Take one pouch from the tin. One is enough, and two is not twice as good.
- Place it under your upper lip, slightly to one side.
- Press it flat against the gum with your tongue.
- Leave it alone. A mild tingle arrives within a minute or two. That is the pouch working, not a problem.
- Take it out when the tingle fades, usually after twenty to forty minutes.
- Put the used pouch in the lid compartment or a bin.
Two mistakes account for most bad first experiences. Do not chew it. It is not gum, and chewing dumps everything at once instead of releasing it steadily. Do not keep moving it around. Shifting it from side to side irritates the gum and shortens how long the pouch stays useful.
How long to keep a nicotine pouch in your mouth
Twenty to forty minutes suits most people.
The release is front-loaded. Most of the nicotine comes out in the first ten minutes or so, then it tails off, and by the half hour mark there is not much left to get. You can leave it in longer and nothing bad happens, you are simply not gaining anything.
If your gum starts to feel sore, take it out earlier. That is a signal about fit and comfort, not something to push through.
First time, take it out at fifteen minutes even if it still feels fine. You can always put a fresh one in. Judging your tolerance on the way down is easier than on the way up.
Can you drink with a nicotine pouch in
Yes, and most people do. Coffee, water, a pint. The pouch stays where it is as long as it is properly seated against the gum.
Two things worth knowing. Hot drinks speed the release up, so a pouch you use with coffee will feel a little stronger early and finish sooner. And anything you drink washes a small amount of the flavour away, which is why the taste fades faster with a drink in hand than without.
Eating is different. Chewing food dislodges the pouch, so take it out before a meal rather than trying to work around it.
What to do if a nicotine pouch feels too strong
Take it out. There is no prize for keeping it in, and a pouch that is too strong for you does not become more effective, only less pleasant.
Then change one thing for the next one, not three.
Drop a strength. The step from 12mg to 6mg changes more than the numbers suggest.
Or move away from the coldest mint. Cooling flavours and nicotine act on the same patch of gum at the same moment, so your mouth reads them as one sensation. A fruit pouch at identical milligrams lands noticeably softer. Change the strength or the flavour, not both, or you will overshoot the other way.
The reverse applies too. If a pouch does nothing at all after twenty minutes, you are probably a level below where you should be rather than doing something wrong. Our nicotine pouch strength guide works through which level suits which user.
How to dispose of a used nicotine pouch
Most tins have a compartment built into the lid for exactly this, which is enough for a day out with no bin nearby. Empty it daily. It is a temporary holder, not storage.
Used pouches go in general waste. Not down the toilet, not on the ground. And there is no point keeping one: a spent pouch has nothing left in it, and putting it back in does nothing at all.
Nicotine pouches and snus are not the same thing
Everything above applies to nicotine pouches, which is what you can legally buy in the UK. Tobacco snus is used the same way but contains tobacco leaf, and it has been banned from sale here since 1992. If you came looking for snus instructions, the mechanics are identical, but the tin you can actually buy is a pouch. We take the difference apart in snus vs nicotine pouches, and there is a snus-specific version in how to use snus.
Getting the first tin right
Technique matters less than picking a sensible starting point. 6mg, a mint you are likely to enjoy, and fifteen minutes for the first one.
Our range runs 6mg, 12mg and 18mg across eight flavours, twenty pouches to a tin rather than the fifteen most of the category ships. The mint pouches are where most people start and the fruit pouches are the gentler side at any given strength. The whole range sits in nicotine pouches.
