Looking for a snus alternative in the UK?

You can't buy snus in Britain. Nicotine pouches come closest, close enough that most people move across without much change to the habit.

Why nicotine pouches are the go-to snus alternative

Same tin, same spot under the lip, same discreet routine. What's missing is the tobacco leaf, and that absence is why pouches are legal here while snus isn't, under the 1992 regulations.

Day to day the change is smaller than people expect. The pouch is white rather than brown, it doesn't stain, and there's nothing to spit out. The tobacco taste goes. The rest of the routine stays put.

Pouches were built to fill precisely that gap, which is a large part of why they spread across Britain as quickly as they did.

How nicotine pouches compare to snus

The difference sits inside the pouch. Snus is ground tobacco leaf. Nicotine pouches use a plant fibre base to carry the nicotine and flavour instead, and you can read the full ingredient breakdown here. The tin, the format and the way you use it all stay close to what snus users already know. Our snus vs. nicotine pouches guide covers the comparison properly.

Is a snus alternative safer than smoking or vaping?

On smoking, the health charity ASH says current evidence suggests oral nicotine pouches are probably less harmful than cigarettes, because nothing is burned. The government has taken the same line, describing pouches as lower risk than smoking. Lower risk isn't the same as safe, and the category is too young for anyone to know what decades of regular use look like.

On vaping there's no comparable evidence in either direction. Pouches and vapes work differently, one is inhaled and one isn't, and no major UK health body has published a direct comparison. Treat confident claims that one beats the other with suspicion, this page included.

How to switch: matching your habit to a strength

Switching is mostly a question of strength, not technique. The pouch goes in the same place and stays there the same way.

If you currently use Try starting at
Occasional or mild snus 6mg to 12mg
Regular snus, several times a day 12mg to 18mg
Strong or extra-strong snus 18mg, adjusting how often you use one rather than reaching for something stronger

Try a couple of flavours and strengths before you settle. Preference counts for as much as habit here. Four places to start:

FAQ

Are nicotine pouches the same as snus?

No, nicotine pouches contain no tobacco leaf, which puts them in a different legal category to snus.

Are nicotine pouches legal in the UK?

Yes, nicotine pouches are legal to buy. From 29 October 2026, selling them to under-18s becomes illegal under the Tobacco and Vapes Act.

Which strength should I start with?

12mg to 18mg if you're switching from regular snus use, 6mg if you're new to nicotine pouches altogether.

Do nicotine pouches taste different to snus?

Flavour profiles vary by brand. With no tobacco leaf in a pouch, the flavour comes entirely from what's added rather than from a tobacco base.

Is a snus alternative healthier than smoking?

ASH says nicotine pouches are probably less harmful than smoking because nothing is burned. They aren't risk-free.
